Scientific Name Halcyon capensis Bengali Name Meghhou Machranga, Guriyal | মেঘহও মাছরাঙা, গুরিয়াল Description The size of the bird is like pigeon. It has a very strong long bill of red color. Head is brown, Wings are greenish blue. Neck and under parts are yellowish brown. Sexes alike. Distribution Can be spotted throughout the Indian union except the arid areas and Bangladesh. Food Its diet chart contains fishes, frogs, crabs and other small reptiles. Occasionally eats other small birds and their eggs. Habits A single or a pair can be spotted near lakes, rivers, ponds etc. It perches on telegraph wires or cables for catching its food. Its way of hunting is similar to small kingfisher but it does not hover and plunge from air. Its call is like cackling “ke-ke-ke-ke-ke”. Nesting Nesting season is from January to July. Its nest is similar to other kingfishers. It digs its nest in river banks or lives in hole of tree trunk. Lays 4 to 5 eggs. Eggs are glossy white in color. বিবরণ আকারে অনেকটা পায়রার সমান। লম্বা লাল রঙের চঞ্চু এর অন্যতম প্রধান বৈশিষ্ট্য। মাথার রঙ বাদামী, ডানার রঙ সবুজ নীল। ঘাড় ও শরীরের নীচের অংশের রঙ হলদে বাদামী। স্ত্রী ও পুরুষ পাখি দেখতে একইরকম। বিস্তার ভারতবর্ষের শুষ্ক অঞ্চলগুলো বাদ দিয়ে পুরো ভারতে ও বাংলাদেশে দেখা যায়। খাদ্য মাছ, ব্যাঙ, কাঁকড়া ও ছোট সরীসৃপকে খাদ্য হিসাবে গ্রহণ করে। মাঝে মাঝে অন্যান্য ছোট পাখি ও তাদের ডিম খায়। স্বভাব একা বা একজোড়া কে নদী, ঝিল বা পুকুরের আশেপাশে দেখা যায়। টেলিগ্রাফের তার বা অন্য কোনো তারের উপর শিকারের সন্ধানে বসে থাকে। শিকারের কৌশল অনেকটা ছোট মাছরাঙার মতো কিন্তু এরা উপরে উড়ে থেকে ঝাঁপ দিয়ে শিকার করেনা। অনেকটা হাসির মতো “ক্যা-ক্যা-ক্যা-ক্যা-ক্যা” করে ডাকে। বাসস্থান জানুয়ারী থেকে জুলাইয়ের মধ্যে বাসা বানায়। বাসা অন্যান্য মাছরাঙাদের মতোই। নদীর তীরে বা গাছের গুঁড়িতে গর্ত করে বাসা বানায় ও থাকে। ৪ থেকে ৫ টা চকচকে সাদা রঙের ডিম দেয়। Story |
