Scientific Name Eudynamys scolopacea Bengali Name Kokil | কোকিল Description The size of the bird is similar to house crow but it is little slenderer than house crow and has a long tail. Male is completely glistening black with white bill and ruby red eyes. Female and juvenile are dark grey-brown, spotted and barred with white on the upper parts, dark barred with white underparts. Female has also white bill and ruby red eyes. Distribution It is resident of entire Indian Union, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. There are three races from from North East India, from Myanmar and from Sri Lanka. Food It is omnivorous. It takes fruits, berries, insects, caterpillars as food. Habits Arboreal bird. Can be spotted in gardens, parks and areas with tall leafy trees of a well wooded area. It is silent during winter and becomes noisy with the arrival of hot weather. The call of the male begins with low “kuoo”, rises in scale for each successive kuoo. After it reaches a high maximum it stops abruptly. The female utters a sharp quick repeated “kik-kik-kik-kik-kik”. Nesting Brood-parasitic bird. Lays eggs in the nest of jungle crow or house crow. April to August is its breeding season which is aligned with the hosts, the house crow or jungle crow. Eggs are smaller and similar to the crows, pale greyish green botched with reddish brown. Special Information Asian Koel is the state bird of Indian state Jharkhand and union territory Puducherry. বিবরণ আকারে অনেকটা কাকের মতো কিন্তু গঠনে কাকের চেয়ে সরু ও লম্বা লেজ থাকে। পুরুষ পাখি কুচকুচে কালো, চঞ্চুর রঙ সাদা ও চোখ রক্তিম-লাল রঙের হয়। স্ত্রী পাখি ও অপ্রাপ্তবয়স্ক পাখি গাঢ় বাদামী, দেহের উপরে ও নীচে সাদা রঙের ছিট ও দাগ থাকে। স্ত্রী পাখির চঞ্চুও সাদা ও চোখ রক্তিম-লাল রঙের হয়। বিস্তার পুরো ভারতবর্ষ, বাংলাদেশ, পাকিস্তান, শ্রীলঙ্কা ও মায়ানমারের বাসিন্দা। তিনটে উপপ্রজাতি আছে প্রথমটা ভারতের উত্তরপূর্বে পাওয়া যায় বাকি দুটো মায়ানমার ও শ্রীলঙ্কায় বাস করে। খাদ্য সর্বভুক পাখি। ফল, জামজাতীয় ফল, পোকামাকড়, শুঁয়োপোকা এর খাদ্য। স্বভাব বৃক্ষাচারী পাখি। গাছপালাযুক্ত অঞ্চলে, বাগানে, পার্কে উঁচু গাছে বসে থাকে। শীতকালে চুপচাপ থাকে দেখে এদের উপস্থিতি টের পাওয়া যায়না কিন্তু গরমের আবির্ভাবেই এরা সুরেলা কণ্ঠে এদের উপস্থিতির কথা জানিয়ে দেয়। পুরুষ পাখির ডাক একটা মৃদু "কু" দিয়ে শুরু হয় এবং পরবর্তী "কু" গুলোতে আওয়াজ ধীরে ধীরে তীব্র হয়ে একটা সময় পর হঠাৎ বন্ধ হয়ে যায়। স্ত্রী পাখি দ্রুত "কিক-কিক-কিক-কিক-কিক" করে আওয়াজ করে। বাসস্থান শাবক নিজে পালন করেনা। পাতিকাক বা দাঁড়কাকের বাসায় ডিম দেয়। এপ্রিল থেকে অগাষ্ট হল এর প্রজনন ঋতু যা কাকদেরও প্রজনন ঋতু। ডিম আকারে কাকের ডিমের মতো কিন্তু সামান্য ছোট হয়, রঙ হালকা ধূসর সবুজ ও গায়ে লালচে-বাদামী দাগ থাকে। বিশেষ তথ্য কোকিল হল ভারতবর্ষের রাজ্য ঝাড়খণ্ড এবং কেন্দ্রশাসিত অঞ্চল পন্ডিচেরি এর রাজ্য পাখি। |
