Scientific Name Centropus sinensis Bengali Name Kubo, Kanakua, Kanakoka, Kuka | কুবো, কানাকুয়া, কানাকোকা, কুকা Description Size of this bird is similar to jungle crow. It is a glossy black bird with black head, chestnut wings and long broad black tail. The eyes are ruby red. Sexes alike. Juvenile has brownish-black and body and there are whitish bars on the underside and tail. Distribution It is resident of Indian Union, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Pakistan. Five subspecies can be found based on their size, color and residence. Food It takes fruits, caterpillars, large insects, snails, young mice, lizards and birds eggs as food. Habits It lives near open forest, near shrubby and bushy areas and waterside grassland. Can be spotted stalking along the ground or jumping from one branch to another in shrubby areas for searching for food. The call is like a deep, repeated “coop-coop-coop”. In some regions in India and Bangladesh the call is associated with sign of omen. Nesting February to September is its nesting season. It builds its nest in shrubs with leaves, twigs etc. It lays 3-4 glossless white. Both sexes share parental duties. বিবরণ আকারে পাতিকাকের চেয়ে বড় এবং প্রায় দাঁড়কাকের মতো। দেহের রঙ চকচকে কালো, ডানার রঙ বাদামী ও কালো রঙের চওড়া লেজ থাকে। চোখের রঙ টকটকে লাল। স্ত্রী ও পুরুষ একই রকমের হয়। অপ্রাপ্তবয়স্ক পাখির রঙ বাদামী-কালচে ও দেহের নীচে ও লেজের দিকে সাদা দাগ দেখা যায়। বিস্তার ভারতবর্ষ, বাংলাদেশ, শ্রীলঙ্কা, মায়ানমার ও পাকিস্তানের বাসিন্দা। আকার, রঙ ও বাসস্থানের ভিত্তিতে পাঁচ প্রকারের উপপ্রজাতি দেখা যায়। খাদ্য ফল, শুঁয়োপোকা, বড় কীট-পতঙ্গ, কেঁচো, ছোট ইঁদুর, টিকিটিকি ও অন্য পাখির ডিম খাদ্য হিসেবে গ্রহণ করে। স্বভাব ঝোপঝাড়যুক্ত এলাকা, জলাভূমি ও গাছপালাযুক্ত ফাঁকা জায়গায় থাকতে পছন্দ করে। বেশীরভাগ সময় মাটিতে হেঁটে বা ঝোপঝাড়ে লাফিয়ে লাফিয়ে খাদ্য সংগ্রহ করত দেখা যায়। একটা গম্ভীর "কুপ-কুপ-কুপ" শব্দে ডাকে। ভারত ও বাংলাদেশের কিছু অঞ্চলে এই পাখির ডাককে অমঙ্গলের লক্ষণ বলে ধরা হয়। বাসস্থান ফেব্রুয়ারী থেকে সেপ্টেম্বরের মধ্যে ঝোপঝাড়ে গাছের ছাল কিংবা পাতা দিয়ে বাসা বানায়। ৩ থেকে ৪ টি সাদা রঙের ডিম দেয়। স্ত্রী ও পুরুষ উভয় পাখিই বাচ্চা লালনপালনের দায়িত্ব পালন করে। Story |
