Scientific Name Coracias benghalensis Bengali Name Nilkantho | নীলকণ্ঠ Description A beautiful bird with large head, heavy black bill, rufous-brown breast and pale blue abdomen and under tail. In flight the dark and pale blue portions of the wing show up as mesmerizing beauty. Sexes alike. Distribution It is a resident of Indian Union, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Myanmar. Food Insects, rodents and reptiles are its main food. Habits It resides near open cultivated country and light deciduous forest. It can be spotted on sitting on telegraph wires or any other point of vantage near cultivated land. It hunts frogs, large insects, lizards on the ground. It is called friend of farmers because it destroys a vast quantity of harmful insects for agriculture. Its call is like “kak kak kak”. Nesting It creates its nest from March to July in the holes of tree trunks at moderate heights with straw, rags and rubbish. Sometimes create nest in hole of building wall. It lays 4-5 glossy white eggs. Special Information It is the state bird of Odisha, Karnataka and Telangana in India. It used to be caught and released during festival Dashami, the last day of Durga Puja. বিবরণ বড় মাথা, মোটা কালো চঞ্চু, বাদামী বুক, হালকা নীল পেট ও লেজওয়ালা খুব সুন্দর পাখি। ওড়ার সময় ডানার হালকা নীল রঙ ও গাঢ় নীল রঙ দারুণ লাগে দেখতে। স্ত্রী ও পুরুষ একই রকমের দেখতে হয়। বিস্তার ভারতবর্ষ, বাংলাদেশ, শ্রীলঙ্কা, পাকিস্তান ও মায়ানমারে বাসিন্দা। খাদ্য কীটপতঙ্গ, বীবর ও সরীসৃপ জাতীয় প্রাণী এর প্রধান খাদ্য। স্বভাব কৃষিক্ষেত্রের বা কম ঘনত্বের পর্ণমোচী অরণ্যের আশেপাশে বাস করে। চাষের জমির আশেপাশে টেলিগ্রাফের তারে কিংবা কোন উঁচু জায়গায় শিকার ধরার জন্য বসে থাকে। উপর থেকে উড়ে এসে মাটি থেকে ব্যাঙ, টিকিটিকি বা বড় কীটপতঙ্গ ধরে খায়। ফসলের অপকারী কীটপতঙ্গকে ধ্বংস করার জন্য একে কৃষকদের বন্ধু বলা হয়। "কক কক কক" শব্দে ডাকে। বাসস্থান মার্চ থেকে জুলাইয়ের মধ্যে বাসা বানায়। মোটামুটি উচ্চতায় গাছের গুঁড়ির গর্তে খড়, নোংরা দিয়ে বাসা বানায়। অনেকসময় অট্টলিকার দেওয়ালের গর্তেও বাসা বানায়। চার থেকে পাঁচটি চকচকে সাদা রঙের ডিম দেয়। বিশেষ তথ্য ওড়িশা, কর্নাটক ও তেলেঙ্গানার রাজ্য পাখি। দুর্গাপূজার শেষদিন অর্থাৎ দশমীর দিন নীলকণ্ঠ পাখি ওড়ানো হয়। Story |
