Bengali Name
Shah Bulbul, Kala Bulbul, Chatak | শাহ বুলবুল, কালা বুলবুল, চাতক

Description
The size of the bird is little larger than Myna. It is a beautiful black and white crested cuckoo. Upper parts are black and under parts are white. White tips on tail and roundish patch of white on wings can be seen during its flight.

Distribution
It is resident of Indian Union and Bangladesh. Absent above 2500 meters of elevation in Himalayas.

Food
Grasshoppers, Caterpillars and berries are its main food.

Habits
It is a locally migratory bird and the migration is controlled by monsoon. Can be spotted in open well-wooded country and near human habitations. Mainly arboreal but occasionally eats food from ground. During its flight from one tree to another tree it calls with plaintive “piu-piu-pee-pee-piu”. In indian culture it is known as Chatak. According to Indian Mythology it moves its head towards sky and call for the rains when it is thirst.

Nesting
June to August. It does not build its own nest and lays eggs in the nest of babblers or bulbul. Eggs are blue in color similar to those of the fosterers.

বিবরণ
আকারে ময়নার চেয়ে একটু বড়। খুব সুন্দর ঝুঁটিওয়ালা সাদাকালো পাপিয়া। দেহের উপরের অংশের রঙ কালো ও নীচের অংশের রঙ সাদা। লেজের ডগার সাদা অংশ ও ডানায় বাঁকানো সাদা দাগ ওড়ার সময় প্রতীয়মান হয়।

বিস্তার
ভারতবর্ষ ও বাংলাদেশের বাসিন্দা। হিমালয়ে ২৫০০ মিটারের উপরে অনুপস্থিত।

খাদ্য
ফড়িং, শুঁয়োপোকা ও জামজাতীয় ফল এর প্রধান খাদ্য।

স্বভাব
স্থানীয় পরিয়ায়ী পাখি। প্রধানত বর্ষাকাল দ্বারা এর আসা-যাওয়া নিয়ন্ত্রিত হয়। খোলা গাছপালাযুক্ত অঞ্চলে দেখা যায়। মানুষের বসতির কাছে থাকতেই পছন্দ করে। প্রধানত বৃক্ষাচারী পাখি তবে মাঝে মাঝে মাটিতে খাবারের সন্ধানে নামে। এক গাছ থেকে অন্য গাছে উড়ে যাবার সময় “পিউ-পিউ-পি-পি-পিউ” করে আওয়াজ করে। ভারতে চাতক পাখি নামে পরিচিত। জনশ্রুতি আছে যে জল তেষ্টায় আকাশের দিকে মাথা তুলে বৃষ্টির জন্য ডাকে।

বাসস্থান
জুলাই থেকে অগাষ্ট এর প্রজনন ঋতু। নিজে বাসা বানাতে পারেনা দেখে বুলবুলি বা ছাতারের বাসাতে ডিম দেয়। ডিমের রঙ নীল যা প্রতিপালক পাখিদের ডিমের মতোই দেখতে।

Story
As I visit jungles, river banks, marshy lands for my photography, my father is always worried about me. When I go outside for photography, he frequently checks my condition over phone. Sometimes he accompanies me during my quest of new birds. That day we were standing beside a jheel. I frequently visit the jheel alone or with friends to watch birds. I had spotted three different types of kingfisher there. That day also I was waiting there to see kingfisher or roller. Suddenly I saw this bird singing from a electric cable over the ploughed fields. I zoomed my camera and clicked few photos and then the bird left quickly.

Bou Kotha Kou | বউ কথা কও

Description
The size of the bird is little larger than pigeon. The color of the upper part is grey and underpart has broad black barring. At the end of the tail has a broad black band and white patch on the tip of the tail. It helps to distinguish it from other cuckoos. The eyering is grey to yellow. The female differs from male by having paler grey on the throat and having more brown on breast and tail.

Distribution
It is resident of Indian Union except the arid areas and Bangladesh. Absent above 3600 meters of elevation in Himalayas.

Food
Takes Grasshoppers, Caterpillars and other insects as food.

Habits
This is an arboreal bird. Occasionally comes to ground for searching foods. Can be spotted in deciduous and evergreen forests. It is locally migratory bird. Can be spotted in some regions in some particular seasons. The call is loud with four notes. It is like “bo-ko-ta-ko” which can be interpreted in bengali as “bou-kotha-kou”. This is why its bengali name is Bou Kotha Kou. Sometimes the call is repeated monotonously and intermittently for hours. During the breeding season the calls become more louder.

Nesting
Mid-March to August. It lays eggs in the nest of other birds like drongo and orioles.

বিবরণ
আকারে পায়রার চেয়ে সামান্য বড়। দেহের উপরের অংশ ধূসর আর নীচের অংশে কালো কালো দাগ থাকে। লেজের শেষের দিকে মোটা কালো অংশ ও লেজের ডগায় সাদা দাগ অন্যান্য পাপিয়াদের সঙ্গে তফাৎ করতে সাহায্য করে। স্ত্রী পাখির ক্ষেত্রে গলার রঙ ধূসর ও বুক ও লেজের রঙ একটু বেশী বাদামী হয়।

বিস্তার
ভারতবর্ষে শুষ্ক অঞ্চলগুলো বাদ দিয়ে বাকী সব জায়গায় ও বাংলাদেশে দেখা যায়। হিমালয়ে ৩৬০০ মিটারের উপরে অনুপস্থিত।

খাদ্য
ফড়িং, শুঁয়োপোকা ও বিভিন্ন কীটপতঙ্গ খাদ্য হিসাবে গ্রহণ করে।

স্বভাব
বৃক্ষাচারী পাখি। মাঝে মাঝে খাবারের সন্ধানে নীচে নামে। পর্ণমোচী বা চিরহরিৎ অরণ্যের বাসিন্দা। স্থানীয় পরিযায়ী পাখি। কিছু কিছু অঞ্চলে বছরের কিছু বিশেষ সময়ে দেখা যায়। উচ্চস্বরে “বো-কো-টা-কা” বলে ডাকে যা বাংলায় অনেকটা “বউ-কথা-কও” এর মতো। এইজন্য বাংলায় একে বউ-কথা-কও বলে। মাঝে মাঝে ঘন্টার পর ঘন্টা একই সুরে ডেকে যায়। প্রজনন ঋতুতে আরো জোরালো ডাক শোনা যায়।

বাসস্থান
মার্চ থেকে অগাষ্ট হল প্রজনন ঋতু। ফিঙে বা বেনে বৌ পাখিদের বাসায় ডিম পারে।

Story
During the winter of 2014, I visited Rasik Bill with some of my friends - Subrata, Shubhajitda, Sibu. It is a small lake and there is a forest beside it. The lake is about 12 kilometers away from my home. I have heard from local people that long before it was home of animals like leopard, porcupine, deer etc. Nowadays those animals cannot be seen due to deforestation and increase of human population near the forest. The entry of the forest has a ticket counter for tourists. That day we planned for entering the jungle without ticket. So we choose a different route inside the jungle. As the time was winter we were not afraid of snakes and we walked about 2-3 kilometers inside the jungle and reached the tourist spot of Rasik Bill. During our walk we heard sound of different birds and insects. We saw an emerald dove but when I tried to click its photo it fled quickly. We were following the call of an Indian Cuckoo and reached the place where the intensity of the call was maximum. The bird was singing from a place hidden behind leaves and branches. After few minutes it gave us a chance to see the owner of the sweet call. It came flying from some tree and sat on a branch in front of us. I got few seconds for clicking its photo and I got success. It fled quickly by hearing our footsteps on dry leaves on the ground.

Chokh Gelo, Pati Chokh Gelo | চোখ গ্যালো, পাতি চোখ গ্যালো

Description
It is a medium sized cuckoo with ashy grey above, whitish below and crossed barred with brown. It has a broadly barred tail. Sexes alike. It looks like male Shikra in flight. It has a distinctive yellow eye ring. Dark streaks on the throat and breast of Large Hawk Cuckoo help to distinguish between Common Hawk Cuckoo and Large Hawk Cuckoo.

Distribution
It is resident of Indian Union upto 800 meters in Himalayas, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Food
Caterpillars, berries, wild figs, insects are its main food.

Habits
It is resident of light forests, open wooded areas, parks and gardens near human habitations. It is mostly silent during winter. So, it is difficult to notice it during the winter. It becomes vocal with the advance of hot weather. A loud, screaming “brain-fever, brain-fever”(“Chokh-Gelo, Chokh-Gelo” in Bengali) repeated monotonously. The pitch of the call is rises for 4-5 times and ends abruptly. Sometimes it calls for the whole night. This is the reason it is called Brainfever Bird.

Nesting
Like other cuckoos it is also nest-parasitic. It lays single egg in each nest of babblers or laughing-thrushes. The egg is similar to the hosts.

বিবরণ
মাঝারি আকারের পাপিয়া। দেহের উপরিভাগ ছাইরঙা ধূসর, নীচে সাদা ও দেহে বাদামী রঙের আড়াআড়ি দাগ থাকে। লেজও বাদামী আড়াআড়ি দাগযুক্ত ও চওড়া হয়। ওড়ার সময় শিকরা ভেবে ভুল হতে পারে। চোখের বাইরে হলদে রঙের বৃত্ত থাকে। গলা ও বুকে গাঢ দাগ এর থাকেনা যা বড় চোখ গ্যালোর থেকে একে আলাদা করত সাহায্য করে।

বিস্তার
ভারতবর্ষে হিমালয়ে ৮০০ মিটার উচ্চতা পর্যন্ত, বাংলাদেশ, পাকিস্তান ও শ্রীলঙ্কায় দেখা যায়।

খাদ্য
শুঁয়োপোকা, বেরি ও ডুমুর জাতীয় ফল, কীটপতঙ্গ এর প্রধান খাদ্য।

স্বভাব
মানুষের বসতির আশেপাশে হালকা গাছপালাযুক্ত অঞ্চলে, পার্কে বা বাগানে বাস করে। শীতকালে ডাকেনা দেখে শীতকালে খুঁজে পাওয়া খুব কঠিন। গরমের আবির্ভাবের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে মৌনমুখরতা ত্যাগ করে। উচ্চস্বরে, চিৎকার করে "ব্রেন-ফিভার,ব্রেন-ফিভার" ("চোখ-গ্যালো","চোখ-গ্যালো") শব্দে ডাকে। ডাকের উচ্চ ধীরে ধীরে উপরের দিকে ওঠে ও হঠাৎ করেই শেষ হয়ে যায়। মাঝে মাঝে সারারাত ধরেও ডাকতে শোনা যায়। এইজন্য একে ব্রেনফিভার বার্ডও বলা হয়।

বাসস্থান
নিজে বাসা তৈরী করেনা। ছাতারে বা পেঙ্গা পাখির বাসায় একটা করে ডিম দেয়। ডিম দেখতে ছাতারে বা পেঙ্গা পখির ডিমের মতোই হয়।

Story
The first photo was taken near Raja Bhat Khawa Museum area. I saw this bird to fly from a distant tree to another. I heard its voice at night or during evening multiple times but that day I was not able to recognise the bird. Later based on web resources I found that it was Common Hawk Cuckoo. The second photo was taken during winter beside a river near my home.
