Scientific Name Upupa epops Bengali Name Mohonchura, Hudhud, Pati Hudhud, Solaiman Pakhi, Hududdu | মোহনচূড়া, হুদহুদ, পাতি হুদহুদ, সুলেয়মান পাখি, হুদুদ্দু Description It is a medium sized fawn colored bird with black and white zebra markings on back. It has a fan shaped crest and it becomes more conspicuous during flight. It has a curved bill for nibbling food from ground. Sexes alike. Distribution It is resident of Indian Union, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. Food It eats insects, pupae from ground. Habits It can be spotted singly or in pair on the ground in a lightly-wooded country. It walks on the ground beside river bank, paddy fields, garden lawns to search its food. Its crest is folded back while it is digging and sometimes it opens and transformed into fanlike shape. Its call is soft and musical “hoo-po” or “hoo-po-po”. Nesting February to May is its nesting season. It uses natural tree hole as nest or creates its nest on ceiling of buildings with straw, rags and rubbish. It lays 5 to 6 white eggs. Both sexes share parental duties. বিবরণ মাঝারি আকারের পিঠে জেব্রার মতো সাদাকালো দাগযুক্ত হরিণরঙা পাখি। একটা ফ্যানের মতো দেখতে ঝুঁটি আছে যা ওড়ার সময় বেশী দৃশ্যমান হয়। মাটি থেকে খুঁটে খাওয়ার জন্য বাঁকানো চঞ্চু থাকে। স্ত্রী ও পুরুষ একইরকমের দেখতে হয়। বিস্তার ভারতবর্ষ, বাংলাদেশ, পাকিস্তান, শ্রীলঙ্কা ও মায়ানমারের বাসিন্দা। খাদ্য কীটপতঙ্গ ও পিউপা মাটি থেকে খুঁটে খায়। স্বভাব হালকা গাছপালাযুক্ত অঞ্চলে একা বা একজোড়াকে মাটিতে ঘুরতে দেখা যায়। খাবারের খোঁজে নদীর ধারে, চাষের জমির আশেপাশে ঘুরে বেড়ায়। মাটি থেকে খাবার খুঁটে খাবার সময় মাথার ঝুঁটি নেমে থাকে মাঝে মাঝে উঠে গিয়ে ফ্যানের মতো আকৃতি ধারণ করে। নরম সুরেলা সুরে "হু-পো" বা "হু-পো-পো" শব্দে ডাকে। বাসস্থান ফ্রেব্রুয়ারী থেকে মে মাসের মধ্যে বাসা বানায়। গাছের কোটরে কিংবা বাড়ির ছাদে খড়, নোংরা দিয়ে বাসা বানায়। পাঁচ থেকে ছয়টা সাদ রঙের ডিম দেয়। স্ত্রী ও পুরুষ উভয়েই বাচ্চা লালনপালনের দায়িত্ব পালন করে। |
