Scientific Name Ploceus philippinus Bengali Name Babui, Baui | বাবুই, বাউই Description Size of Baya Weaver is similar to sparrow. During non breeding season the plumage of both male and female bird resemble female house sparrow. They have a stout conical bill, short square cut tail, dark brown streaked fulvous buff above and plain whitish fulvous below. Male has bright yellow crown, dark brown mask, upper parts are dark brown streaked with yellow with yellow breast and cream buff below during the breeding season. Distribution It is resident of Indian Union, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Pakistan. Five subspecies can be found based on their size, color and residence. Food Seeds and insects are its main food. Habits Baya weaver likes to travel in groups and it is a social and gregarious bird. Baya weaver can be spotted in flocks with considerable size in green paddy or grain harvested fields. Sometimes it damages ripening crops. Flocks fly in close formations and sometimes create beautiful 3D complex geometrical structures. It seasonal local movements are controlled by the grain cultivation. Its call is “chit-chit-chit” which is similar to sparrow. In breeding season the males utter long “chee-ee” in chorus. Nesting May to September is its nesting season. It creates its nest in long trees near paddy fields with strips of paddy leaf and rough edged grasses. The nests look like upside down pitcher with long vertical entrance tube. This bird is called waver for its amazing technique for creating its nests. It lays 2-4 pure white eggs. Male alone builds the nest and female alone incubates. বিবরণ বাবুই আকারে চড়ুই পাখির সমান। প্রজনন ঋতু ব্যতীত স্ত্রী ও পুরুষ বাবুই দেখতে অনেকটা স্ত্রী চড়ুই পাখির মতো। দেহের উপরিভাগ বাদামী দাগযুক্ত তামাটে বর্ণ, নীচের অংশ ফিকে তামাটে, চঞ্চু ছোট শঙ্কুর ন্যায় ও লেজ ছোট ও বর্গাকার হয়। প্রজনন ঋতুতে পুরুষ পাখির মাথায় উজ্জ্বল হলুদ রঙ ধারণ করে। এছাড়াও প্রজনন ঋতুতে পুরুষ পাখির বুক ও পিঠের দিকেও হলদে আভা দেখা যায়। বিস্তার ভারতবর্ষ, বাংলাদেশ, শ্রীলঙ্কা, মায়ানমার ও পাকিস্তানের বাসিন্দা। আকার, রঙ ও বাসস্থানের ভিত্তিতে পাঁচ প্রকারের উপপ্রজাতি দেখা যায়। খাদ্য বীজ ও কীটপতঙ্গ এর প্রধান খাদ্য। স্বভাব সামাজিক ও দলপ্রিয় পাখি। চাষের জমিতে বা আশেপাশে বাবুইয়ের ঝাঁক দেখা যায়। ফসল পাকার ঋতুতে অনেকসময় ফসলের খুব ক্ষতি করে। ওড়ার সময় দলবদ্ধ ভাবে ওড়ে ও ওড়ার সময় মাঝে মাঝে সুন্দর ত্রিমাত্রিক জ্যামিতিক নকশা সৃষ্টি করে। বেশীরভাগ সময়েই এদের স্থানীয়ভাবে চলাফেরা শস্যক্ষেত্রের দ্বারা নিয়ন্ত্রিত হয়। চড়ুইয়ের মতো "চিট-চিট-চিট" শব্দে ডাকে। প্রজনন ঋতুতে পুরুষ পাখি দীর্ঘ "চিইইই-ইই" শব্দে একসঙ্গে কূজন করে। বাসস্থান মে থেকে সেপ্টেম্বর এর বাসা বানানোর সময়। চাষের জমির কাছাকাছি ঘাস ও পাতা ছিঁড়ে এনে উঁচু গাছে উল্টানো কলসীর মতো বাসা বানায়। বাসার নীচ দিকে লম্বা নলাকার রাস্তা থাকে। এর বাসা বানানোর অসাধারণ কৌশলের জন্য একে তাঁতি পাখি বলে। ২ থেকে ৪ টি সাদা রঙের ডিম দেয়। পুরুষ পাখি বাসা বানানোর ও স্ত্রী পাখি ডিমে তা দেওয়ার দ্বায়িত্ব পালন করে। |
