Scientific Name Oriolus traillii Bengali Name Tamarong Benebou, Tamate-Lal Benebou | তামারঙ বেনে বৌ, তামাটে-লাল বেনে বৌ Description The size of the bird is little larger than myna. As an arboreal bird it keeps itself to the top of the trees. Due to its maroon and black plumage it is called Maroon Oriole. Head, neck and wings are black with a bluish beak. Glossy crimson-maroon is the dominant color in adult male and the tail is chestnut-maroon. In female and immature male the under parts are greyish-white streaked with blackish. Distribution It can be found in lower Himalayan regions from Himachal Pradesh eastwards to Arunachal Pradesh and from there southwards including hills of Manipur till Chittagong in Bangladesh. Food Insects, berries, nectar, wild figs are its main food. Habits It is resident of moist deciduous and evergreen forest in the himalayan foothills and adjacent plains. Can be spotted singly or in pairs. Sometimes can be spotted with company of other birds like drongos and minivets. It likes to stay behind leaves and branches of tall trees but can be viewed clearly when it takes flower nectar as food. Its call is like a harsh “kee-ah” followed by a fluty whistle like “pi-lo-lo”. Nesting It creates its nest from April to May. The cup like nest is created in the horizontal fork of a branch by woven bast fibres with cobwebs. Lays 2 to 3 eggs, pinkish white dotted with black or reddish brown. বিবরণ আকারে ময়নার চেয়ে সামান্য বড়। বৃক্ষাচারী পাখি হিসাবে গাছের উপরের দিকে থাকে। মেরুন আর কালো রঙের প্রাধান্যের জন্য একে তামারঙা বেনে বৌ বলে। মাথা, ঘাড়, ডানা কালো রঙের হয় ও চঞ্চুর রঙ নীলাভ কালো রঙের। চকচকে গাঢ় তামাটে রঙ প্রাপ্তবয়স্ক পুরুষ পাখির প্রধান রঙ। লেজের দিকের রঙ বাদামী তামাটে। স্ত্রী ও অপ্রাপ্তবয়স্ক পুরুষ পাখির দেহের নীচের দিকে ধূসর সাদা রঙের উপর কালো রঙের দাগ থাকে। বিস্তার হিমালয়ের নীচের দিকে ও কাছাকাছি সমতল এলাকায় দেখতে পাওয়া যায়। হিমাচল প্রদেশ থেকে পূর্বে অরুণাচলপ্রদেশ ও সেখান থেকে দক্ষিণে মনিপুর হয়ে বাংলাদেশের চট্টগ্রাম পর্যন্ত দেখা যায়। খাদ্য কীটপতঙ্গ, জামজাতীয় ফল, ফুলের মধু, জংলী ডুমুর এর প্রধান খাদ্য। স্বভাব হিমালয়ের নীচু অঞ্চল ও আশেপাশের সমতলের আর্দ্র-পর্ণমোচী ও চিরহরিৎ অরণ্যের বাসিন্দা। একা বা জোড়ায় দেখতে পাওয়া যায়। অনেকসময় ফিঙে বা মিনিভেট পাখির দলের সঙ্গে দেখতে পাওয়া যায়। সাধারণত উঁচু গাছে পাতা বা ডালপালার আড়ালে লুকিয়ে থাকে তবে ফুলের মধু সংগ্রহ করার সময় স্পষ্ট দেখা যায়। এর ডাক অনেকটা কর্কশ “কিহ-আ” এর পর শিস “পি-লো-লো” এর মতো। বাসস্থান এপ্রিল থেকে মে এর বাসা বানাবার সময়। গাছের ডালের কোনে কাপের মতো বাসা তন্তু ও মাকড়শার জাল দিয়ে তৈরী করে। ২ থেকে ৩ টি কালো বা লালচে বাদামী দাগওয়ালা গোলাপী সাদা ডিম দেয়। Story |
