Scientific Name Pavo cristatus Bengali Name Mayur | ময়ূর Description Size is similar as vulture. The adult male has long tail which has copper, green and blue feathers. The adult male has crest on its head. The adult female does not have tail but crest is available on its head. Blue is dominant color in male and copper is dominant color in female. The neck color is similar in both sexes. Distribution Can be spotted in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Absent above 1800 meters of elevation in the himalayas. Food Food chart is similar as junglefowl. It takes seeds, fruits, insects, lizards, snakes as food. Habits It is resident of both plain and hills and it loves to stay near river or water sources. Can be spotted in deciduous forest or near human habitations. It is always alerted and shy. 4 to 5 hens accompany one cock. The male erects its attractive tail and dances during breeding season to attract the females. It moves its head up and down and generates loud harsh screaming like sound “may-awe” or short “ka-ann” repetitively. Nesting Nesting season is January to October in India. The nest is created with sticks, dry grass or leaves in the shallow scrapes of the ground or on the big tree-trunks. Lay 3 to 5 eggs, pale cream color. Special Information Indian Peafowl or Mayur(ময়ূর) is the national bird of India. বিবরণ আকারে অনেকটা শকুনের মতো। প্রাপ্তবয়স্ক ময়ূরের লম্বা পেখম থাকে তাতে তামাটে, সবুজ ও নীল রঙের পালক থাকে। লম্বা পেখম ময়ূরীর ক্ষেত্রে অনুপস্থিত। ময়ূর ময়ূরী উভয়েরই মাথায় ঝুঁটি থাকে। ময়ূরের ক্ষেত্রে নীল রঙের প্রাধান্য ও ময়ূরীর ক্ষেত্রে তামাটে রঙের প্রাধান্য দেখা যায়। ময়ূরীর গলার রঙ অনেকটা ময়ূরের মতোই হয়। বিস্তার ভারতবর্ষ, শ্রীলঙ্কা ও বাংলাদেশে দেখা যায়। হিমালয়ের ১৮০০ মিটারের উপরে দেখা যায়না। খাদ্য অনেকটা বনমোরগের মতো খাদ্যতালিকা। খাদ্যতালিকায় রয়েছে দানা-শস্য, ফল, কীটপতঙ্গ, টিকিটিকি-গিরগিটি ও ছোট সাপ। স্বভাব সমভূমি ও পার্বত্য এলাকায় মানুষের বসতির কাছে বা ঝোপঝাড় ও জঙ্গলে বাস করে। কিছুটা লাজুক প্রকৃতির ও সর্বদা সজাগ থাকে। নদী বা কোনো জলাশয়ের কাছে থাকতে পছন্দ করে। একটা ময়ূরের সঙ্গে প্রায় ৪ ৫ টা ময়ূরী ঘুরে বেড়ায়। প্রজনন ঋতুতে ময়ূরীকে আকর্ষণ করার জন্য ময়ূর পেখম মেলে নাচ করে। মাথা নাড়িয়ে উচ্চস্বরে “মে-আ” “মে-আ” বলে চিৎকার করে। অনেকটা “কেকা”র মতো শোনায় দেখে ময়ূরের ডাককে কেকাধ্বনি বলে। বাসস্থান ভারতবর্ষে জানুয়ারী থেকে অক্টোবর মাসের মধ্যে বাসা বানায়। বড় গাছের গুঁড়িতে বা মাটির গর্তে কাঠি, শুকনো ঘাস বা পাতা দিয়ে বাসা বানায়। ৩ থেকে ৫ টা হালকা ক্রিম রঙের ডিম দেয়। বিশেষ তথ্য ময়ূর বা Indian Peafowl হল ভারতবর্ষের জাতীয় পাখি। Story |
