বিজ্ঞানসম্মত নাম – Merops orientalis

পরিচিতি - পাখিটি লম্বায় অনেকটা চড়ুই পাখির সমান । পাখিটির রঙ ঘাসের মতো সবুজ, মাথা ও গলাটা বাদামী হয় । লেজের মাঝের অংশ টা পেছনের দিকে অনেকটা লম্বা হয়ে পিনের আকারে শেষ হয় । এর চোখের উপরটা কালো ও গলার কাছেও একটা কালো রেখা থাকে । স্ত্রী ও পুরুষ পাখি একই রকমের হয় দেখতে হয় । টেলিগ্রাফের তারে, বাঁশের বেড়ার উপর বসে থাকতে দেখা যায় । সাধারণত চাষবাসের জমির কাছাকাছি, বনের আশেপাশে, জলা জমির কাছে এবং বাগানে একে বেশী দেখা যায় । কীট পতঙ্গ শিকার করে খেয়ে বেঁচে থাকে । একটানা “টিট-টিট” অথবা “ট্রি-ট্রি-ট্রি” স্বরে ডাকে । এটি ফেব্রুয়ারি থেকে মে মাসের মধ্যে মাটিতে আড়াআড়ি ভাবে গর্ত করে বাসা তৈরি করে । গর্তের শেষে ডিমের জন্য জায়গা থাকে ।

Story
The photo at top right was taken from my balcony in Kolkata. A pair of bee-eaters were hunting flies — they were restless and incredibly quick. I waited on the balcony for a long time hoping to get a good shot. Fortunately, one of the birds perched on a wire on the roof in front of my balcony, and I was able to capture the photo.

When I was in my 4th year of B.E. course, I went to Gadiyara with my classmates for a picnic. It took about 3.5-4 hours to reach the place from Kolkata and during that time we had enjoyed a lot in the bus. We had taken everything for cooking and we had also hired 3-4 cooks for that. So, we had no work once we reached there. I borrowed the camera from my friend Soumik and started walking along the river bank. I spotted the bee-eater about one kilometers away from the picnic spot. The photo I clicked is at the bottom right corner.
