Scientific Name Hierococcyx varius Bengali Name Chokh Gelo, Pati Chokh Gelo | চোখ গ্যালো, পাতি চোখ গ্যালো Description It is a medium sized cuckoo with ashy grey above, whitish below and crossed barred with brown. It has a broadly barred tail. Sexes alike. It looks like male Shikra in flight. It has a distinctive yellow eye ring. Dark streaks on the throat and breast of Large Hawk Cuckoo help to distinguish between Common Hawk Cuckoo and Large Hawk Cuckoo. Distribution It is resident of Indian Union upto 800 meters in Himalayas, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Food Caterpillars, berries, wild figs, insects are its main food. Habits It is resident of light forests, open wooded areas, parks and gardens near human habitations. It is mostly silent during winter. So, it is difficult to notice it during the winter. It becomes vocal with the advance of hot weather. A loud, screaming “brain-fever, brain-fever”(“Chokh-Gelo, Chokh-Gelo” in Bengali) repeated monotonously. The pitch of the call is rises for 4-5 times and ends abruptly. Sometimes it calls for the whole night. This is the reason it is called Brainfever Bird. Nesting Like other cuckoos it is also nest-parasitic. It lays single egg in each nest of babblers or laughing-thrushes. The egg is similar to the hosts. বিবরণ মাঝারি আকারের পাপিয়া। দেহের উপরিভাগ ছাইরঙা ধূসর, নীচে সাদা ও দেহে বাদামী রঙের আড়াআড়ি দাগ থাকে। লেজও বাদামী আড়াআড়ি দাগযুক্ত ও চওড়া হয়। ওড়ার সময় শিকরা ভেবে ভুল হতে পারে। চোখের বাইরে হলদে রঙের বৃত্ত থাকে। গলা ও বুকে গাঢ দাগ এর থাকেনা যা বড় চোখ গ্যালোর থেকে একে আলাদা করত সাহায্য করে। বিস্তার ভারতবর্ষে হিমালয়ে ৮০০ মিটার উচ্চতা পর্যন্ত, বাংলাদেশ, পাকিস্তান ও শ্রীলঙ্কায় দেখা যায়। খাদ্য শুঁয়োপোকা, বেরি ও ডুমুর জাতীয় ফল, কীটপতঙ্গ এর প্রধান খাদ্য। স্বভাব মানুষের বসতির আশেপাশে হালকা গাছপালাযুক্ত অঞ্চলে, পার্কে বা বাগানে বাস করে। শীতকালে ডাকেনা দেখে শীতকালে খুঁজে পাওয়া খুব কঠিন। গরমের আবির্ভাবের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে মৌনমুখরতা ত্যাগ করে। উচ্চস্বরে, চিৎকার করে "ব্রেন-ফিভার,ব্রেন-ফিভার" ("চোখ-গ্যালো","চোখ-গ্যালো") শব্দে ডাকে। ডাকের উচ্চ ধীরে ধীরে উপরের দিকে ওঠে ও হঠাৎ করেই শেষ হয়ে যায়। মাঝে মাঝে সারারাত ধরেও ডাকতে শোনা যায়। এইজন্য একে ব্রেনফিভার বার্ডও বলা হয়। বাসস্থান নিজে বাসা তৈরী করেনা। ছাতারে বা পেঙ্গা পাখির বাসায় একটা করে ডিম দেয়। ডিম দেখতে ছাতারে বা পেঙ্গা পখির ডিমের মতোই হয়। Story |
